Applying for a government contract, a passport, a visa, or certain loans in Ghana? At some point you'll likely be asked for a Tax Clearance Certificate (TCC), proof from the Ghana Revenue Authority that your tax affairs are in order. Here's what that actually takes.
What You Need to Qualify
- A valid Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) or Ghana Card PIN, which now doubles as your TIN.
- All tax returns filed, up to and including the last year of assessment.
- All taxes, interest, and penalties paid (or, if you have tax arrears, covered by a satisfactory installment arrangement with GRA).
How to Apply
You can apply through the Ghana Taxpayers' Portal at taxpayersportal.com or the Ghana Taxpayers' App: register with your TIN or Ghana Card PIN, verify with a one-time password sent to your preferred contact, and submit your request stating the purpose the certificate is needed for.
How Long It Takes
If your filings and payments are current, processing typically takes 2–5 days online. That's exactly why staying on top of monthly PAYE, VAT, and withholding tax filings matters. See our filing calendar for Ghanaian SMEs. A business that's behind on returns will need to catch up before a TCC can be issued.
Validity
A Tax Clearance Certificate is valid for 12 months from the date it's issued.
How Hemerge Can Help
We keep your filings current so a TCC request is never held up by an outstanding return, and we can handle the application on your behalf when you need one for a contract, loan, or license.
